Showing results for search engine optimization. Search instead for search engine optimisation.

I’m in the UK. I think you spell SEO as ’search engine optimisation’ but Google in it’s infinite wisdom wants to refine my search and give me what it wants, what is frankly, arguably US spellings -  (search engine optimization with a *z*). Cheeky.

seo results in google

And then it’s got the cheek to even ask me again if I actually meant Search Engine Optimization when I specifically tell Google again I really did mean search engine optimisation the first time…..

“Did you mean: search engine optimization

%$^& LOL! :)

Way to help the US sites in UK results…….

UPDATE – The cheeky beggars even change your search and results to ’search engine optimization’ by default when you click next through to the following ten results – even when you’vc specifically told Google you WANT search engine optimisation, the UK spelling, with an *S*. (Shout out to Matt Hopkins, Matt Davies and Baiduyou in my Twitterfeed for the heads up)

UPDATE 2 - Even more maddening, is the above modification only happens on the Gogle UK search, not the .com search lol :)

UPDATE 3 – Obviously Google is working on this SERP. :)

UPDATE 4 – Many folk have very similar complaints with many other Americanisations of words – moans a plenty in the comments…. thanks to James for the link to the Oxford website discussing this.

How annoying is that for UK SEO? Is Google destroying our language?

UPDATE 5 – Perhaps an interesting comparison on the two terms by Kieron Hughes – see search engine optimisation trends:

UPDATE 6 – There’s more discussion about Google optimizing the ‘American‘ language in UK serps at Latitude too :)

UPDATE 7 – After Patrick Altoft of Blogstorm blogged & twittered direct to various Google bods, one seemed to reply, and shortly afterwards this issue with the spelling of search engine (whatever) was resolved…. for the time being.

UPDATE 8 – Seems this to be resolved, but there’s more google misspelling fun at Malcolm Coles blog
