Fact – You don’t need to pay to get into search engines listings, and Google (and Bing and Yahoo) will probably find your site as soon as it is on the web (or soon after).
How To Submit A Site To Google, Bing and Yahoo: Typically, just get a few links to your website, from other sites that are already in these search engines themselves. Search engines find these links and follow them to your site.
Submitting your site to Google isn’t hard, in 2012. Getting a link from another website, to your website, will usually do the trick and in fact in recent months you don’t really have to do that.
BUT – If you really want to give your site a chance to rank well:
- Make sure all your title tags are unique
- Make sure your meta-descriptions are unique
- Make sure all your pages link to each other, or at least relevant pages
- Read Google Webmaster Guidelines and what others think of them
All going well in a couple of weeks ,after putting something unique on your website, Google will find your website and your site will rank somewhere in all the search engines listings.
It can take hours, days or weeks to get into the search engines. To find out if your site is in the search engines just use the site command but replace it with your web address eg:
Type this into the Google search box:
- site:www.hobo-web.co.uk or if you are looking for a specific page, use
- info:www.hobo-web.co.uk

Can you teach me how to submit to more search engines? As the same in your post, most of the companies out there charges a fee for submitting. I mean, is that legal or what?
It’s not a question about legality. Google doesn’t mean, or make, the law. The point of this post is that there is no need to submit your site to search engines. Google, Yahoo and MSN will find your site if you have a link to your website on another site. It really is that simple. This is what some other search engine optimisation firms just won’t tell you. The fact is, is that they charge you for submitting your site to search engines, simply relying on your ignorance of seo. Getting into the search engines in my opinion, is not SEO. SEO is about better performance once you are in search engines.
Good Day Shaun, Very interresting information about ranking, I didn’t even know that we don’t need to send our website link to search engines… Right there you got my attention buddy… It’s simply funny to believe that it is that simple… lol My only question would be, how to you get link to other website… I mean do we just ask them??? Oh and, before I forgot… Merry Christmas and Happy New year… Thank you in advance… Lambert
Hi Shaun, I’m really amazed by your advice and very happy too. I really didn’t want to get into link exchanges with some of the ‘nasty’ sites out there in my line of business. I’m trying hard to build reputable friendly site with no ‘unsuitable’ content. So you have made my day. Thanks, Yasmin x
Very helpful advice. I’m a beginner at this and am very grateful for any free advice.
Thank you for the advice. i am just learning how to market my business better and this was very helpful.
I’m so new to all this it’s kind of mind boggling. I never realised I could get a listing without paying for it. now i just have to work out how to add tags and meta-descriptions ;-) Thanks for the information Maria
Hi Shaun, Thanks for this really useful free advice. I am new to all this and it is mind boggling, less boggeld now! My question is the same as Lambert’s posted on 28th Dec 07, which is ‘ how do i get a link from another search engine popular, high ranked site so the spiders can follow it and find me? I have a Typepad blog offering counselling services that no one can find. Am working on keyword research and tags and have good ideas from your site so will keep trying. Many thanks Robyn
Hi Robyn – Basically you need to add good content to your site that compels other sites in your niche to link to you. This is called link-bait. And you can do it for any industry. Add articles to your blog, link out to others in your niche – by doing so, you actually tell them about your site. Do a bit of research on blogs (dofollow blogs at first) in your niche that pass Google juice. Find directories in your niche also and submit your site. Consider a link in the Yahoo directory. Basically, get links! Google knows about your site but you don’t have many links to it – it’s a site about Counselling, isnt it ;) – there you go, I had a brief look at your site and you’re not doing anything fishy, so have an editorially approved link. :) on me. This will tell Google about your site, but ideally, get links from your niche where possible.
Actually Robyn I think you need to look at your site structure and potential duplicate content issues too.
Please help me! Google doesn’t recognize my site with the “site:” command. my site is discoverytoyslink.com/esuite/home/play_time Could you help me to get it out there? thanks! Patricia
Please help me get noticed in search engines – my target group is people in the North Yorkshire area but I am unsure of the best way to get noticed. I am new to using the internet for my business and I am worried I may have gone about it all the wrong way!!! I’ve added a few links into my website but i have used an instant site to build my website could I have followed an easier – cheaper route? Thanks for your help. Debbie
I found this website very informative. I have been submitting to Google but I am now going to use links as well. Thanks
Hey Ian a bit of free advice. Check out your titles first – your page titles on every page need optimising, especially on your home page as I take it your not trying to rank for “home page” :) – housekeeping first before you go get those links.
I have recently set up an Essex-based bookkeeping company and would like advice as to how to get my website to appear on the left-hand, unsponsored side of the major search engines. Many thanks for any help you can offer. Bookkeepingfirst.com

Hi I wish I had found your site earlier. I have just published my web site and Google spider? has found it. I know that you have said you only help people who are not in Google but please can you point me in the correct direction as to how I can get Google to bring my site up using virtual office as at the moment it will only list it using virtual office angels. How do I get Yahoo / MSN listing for free. Kind regards Joanne
I made a basic error when setting up my site. I use a host in the US and my site is a .com and my company is in the UK. Result is my site is well recognised by google world wide but it is absolutely nowhere in google UK. Is there any way of easily rectifying this? Iam not a web design professional.
Hey, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for a well established site that wants to give away links. There should be more sites like this. Great help. Thanks!
I know I just posted but if anyone has any suggestions for my site for seo they would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much for the information, I am just in the processing of starting my own business from home and have spent the last 2-3 weeks trying to find ways to link to search engines with minimal cost. Your site is very useful….thank you again.

I would like my site to be listed
Thanks for posting this! It can be so difficult to try and take it all on by yourself, when you’re first creating a website. I was actually in the process of doing so, but after spending weeks just trying to learn everything there is to know about domain names, hosting, ect… finally I ended up just going with creating a blog first… (which doesn’t really have much to do with my original website idea, but I’m just trying to get used to things first). I’m fine using myspace, but who isn’t… lol Well, I’m off to go check out the rest of your posts!
This is not a business site its just a personal site but I do want it to reach google
hope it works
Hey, just wanted to say thanks, I keep coming back to see whats new. Lots of really good info here. I’ve picked up some really useful tips and of course a great back link :-) Thanks again.
Thank you very much for the help. This is a really good thing you are doing for small businesses. Great, concise article.
Nice move, here is mine rn-photography.com
Thank you for the information . . . I have a classical music blog I’ve been trying to get into the search engines since I started blogging regularly earlier this month, without success. I’ve left comments on other blogs, posted it in my Amazon profile, put it in my Amazon store in several places, all without result. Thank you for your generosity.
Hi, It took me a while to start getting any search engine traffic to my blog because I forgot to do the internal linking. I’d done it on my site, but not my blog. When a friend called it to my attention and I spent a couple of days doing internal links, my traffic tripled within a week. Now I’m careful to link all my posts, and my search results traffic continues to grow. I recently did a 3-part series analyzing my traffic with Google Analytics. It may interest some of your readers. Don’t worry I’m not your competition. My blog is on online and off line marketing. I rarely write on topics limited to online marketing. Warmly, Linda P. Morton
Hi, Im glad there are still some honest people left on the web, I would like to get my website listed in google, I have managed to get onto yahoo (how i do not know lol). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Great stuff keep up the good work
Thank you for the advice
Cool. Just the trick. Thanks for being there. Cheers
Hey I was wondering if you could add my site? I already have my meta tags set up in my footer code. It’s a new forum discussing anime, mangas etc such as bleach, naruto, love hina, and negima!
Note – I am closing this post. Some think that commenting on this page will get you a search engine friendly link. Not the case. You have got to contribute to a number of other posts on the blog too to activate seo friendly links to your site – that gives me a chance to check the site I am linking to is not a spammer :)
