One of my new friends at the SEO bit of UK Business Forums (one of the best forums I have tried to get involved with over the last few months) sent me a sticky regarding this interesting thread which stated, and I quote:

” I am considered the Number 1 SEO consultant in the UK, A big claim maybe, but I can say this based on the search engine results I have obtained. As to the cost of SEO ,it would seem to me that most companies out there are taking the public for a ride in various areas.

  1. There is no need for a website to be submitted to search engines they will find your site.
  2. Once a site has been properly optimized it will usually stay at its high position for a very long period. So whats with the regular submission and reports?
  3. Why long term contracts when all that is needed is a watching brief.
  4. I never spend more than a week optimizing a site, unless it is very large and needs a complete re design to make it search engine friendly. So where does the £2k to 15k a month come from.
  5. SEO is pretty simple once you understand the basics. Not rocket science as some would have you believe.
  6. Tip :find a company that has provable results, and not for some obscure search terms like “fish and chip shops in peckham” try things as competitive as “jet ski” or “Volkswagen parts” or a major brand name.
  7. the proof of the pudding is definitely in the eating in SEO.”

On the surface it looks like pure ignorance but it is this type of ignorance that gives hard working seo consultants a bad name and can be damaging.

SEO is hard work, creativity and long hours. To put it bluntly I know for a fact that I could target his keyterms and possibly take them from him. Not with rocket science, just with hard work and putting in the hours…. he’s obviously not, spending only “a week” which makes me believe his positions are vulnerable. Or does he think that he knows how Google works - that his SEO is unsurmountable and unsurpassed in it’s brilliance, that his week could possibly stand up to my year?

Hold on. Didn’t Sirearle say his SEO wasn’t rocket science?

That’s my point anyway. The competition. If someone is targeting a term over the course of a year there is much more chance they will succeed than the “1 weeker”. Ask any SEO. Ask any SEO the opposite, and not even the best search engine optimiser could say with confidence that this could be achieved. Ridiculous. Why oh why would anyone risk their reputation with such a statement without at least putting forward a good argument?

I’m currently formulating my reply to the thread,…I have already got my thoughts on Sirearls post (number 32) - although I think the poster has far from “upset” people!

Number 1 SEO indeed! Thanks Darren (who does a bit of web design in Hull I see)!
