I have to admit to Tweeting gibberish from time to time. Usually I'm posting links to things about Web development, but I've also been known to Tweet about food, for example I might take a picture of my dinner and post a link to it. I guess the point is to find the balance between the useful stuff and the fluff and nonsense. You need a bit of the latter to show your personality but not so much that it gets tedious.

You make a good point about what happens in multi-user conversations. Those are probably the Tweets that seem most inane or tedious out of context. Some say things that aren't interesting to a majority should be direct messaged, but when more than 2 people are involved that's hard to do. Perhaps all we can do is try to Tweet a variety of things that will appeal most to our followers. - @hacool

I started out LOATHING twitter, but I'm beginning to see some business benefits of it. But good god do I have to agree with this. I can't count the times I login and see nothing but drivel...and my follow list is only in the 20s.

I have noticed the majority of our followers are other marketers and SEOs, so why would I subject them to a ton of nonsense?

Now granted, part of our branding is being regular guys, so we'll occasionally throw in a tweet about lunch, or one of our employees, but the incessant, valueless tweeting gets people off un-followed very quickly.

Amen.

I've caught myself tweeting some pretty vapid garbage in the recent past... As a beginner in social media, I've been told by so-called "social media experts" that it's encouraged to post about the mundane moments of your life. The rationale was that it makes you seem "human" and encourages more people to start a relationship or conversation with you.
I've since found this practice to be really intolerable, and have tried to unlearn the habit.

Awesome post, man.

To me it still looks like an impossible to consume mismash of information - great to publish stuff, but how do people actually have "conversations" there when you cant see what someone is replying to?

I agree with Shaun, some twitters are a bit dry where the same persons blogs are really interesting. Having twittered for a few days...i am already fed up and bored. I think i prefer linked in, it seems to suit me better :) I am building up great links for The Scottish Baby Show! It seems a friendly way to link.

I might tweet for a bit longer...... perhaps i havent given it a chance.

Hows Linked-In V's twitter Shaun?

I think you are missing the essence of Twitter. Twitter is a microblog. People are using Twitter for various reasons, even if it is to broadcast that they're eating pizza -- maybe they just gave a few followers an idea of what to pick up for dinner for the kids. You never know, and that makes neither party a moron. (I do grasp the entertainment value of your name-calling, however ;))

But, you are correct... If random, non-essential microbloggeries are not your cup of tea, then you can simply unfollow.

I'm just a random blogger that has been subscribed to this site for quite a while. I tweet about what I ate, and the last lip gloss I bought, and other rambling non-necessities but I do have 800 followers so not everyone loathes random idiocies .;)
