Top Ten Most Popular Versions Of IE (Internet Explorer) Of Last 50,000 Visitors
Blurb by Shaun Anderson (Hobo) -I *&^%*£% hate Microsoft Internet Explorer. It’s probably the single longest pain in the backside I’ve encountered in nearly ten years making websites. Ask any website designer or developer – and browser compatibility issues are still an issue. I use Firefox and may well consider using Chrome when it arrives for the Apple Mac.
This site got @50,000 visitors in the last 4 weeks or so. I was interested how many of them where still using Internet Explorer. So here’s the breakdown at least for our, admittedly, little more tech savvy audience.
It’s good to see Firefox is the most popular browser now with over 50% of the visitors to this site, but a lot of people still use IE. That’s what a monopoly does for you I suppose.

In fact nearly 35% of visitors choose IE as their browser and the screenshot below illustrates:
- 70% of Internet Exporer users are using IE7,
- 20% are using IE6 and
- 10% are using IE8.

Looks like we’ll still be supporting IE 6, IE 7 and IE 8 for a while yet….. unfortunately.
Not many people at all use IE 5 any more thank god.
We've recently updated our comments policy and increased the number of comments a visitor has to make to get seo friendly links in comment signatures to reward long term readers and make it a bit harder for dofollow spammers ;) - I told you dofollow spamming wasn't a long term strategy....
While I can see your point about supporting IE6, especially as a good percentage of your readers still use it, surely it’s time to move on?
This browser has been around for nearly eight years, it’s unreliable and not fit for purpose, if it were a car or your girlfriend you would have binned them long ago. A good few years ago now, web designers faced the same problem Netscape Navigator and decided that it was up to them to take a stand and stop supporting it with the introduction of the @import rule, due to Netscape Navigator not being able to understand this rule and therefore processing the page as regular text.
Although I understand that many cannot upgrade due to using corporate desktops or using older computers, they really aren’t the type of user you are targeting. You’re targeting web savvy people who probably know there is more than one internet browser out there.
People that use IE6 are hindering the development of the web.

I think those are actually quite positive figures. 7% for IE6 is a good sign
I am down to 6%. However, checking on non-techy sites I am getting 16% of people still using IE6. What figures do you think you will be waiting for until you flop IE6 off?
I can only shudder to think what the web is like for those people still using IE5. There is an app called MultipleIEs, which lets you use it.
