Getting Back To SEO Basics
Posted by Shaun
I took a break from blogging in March to focus on some of the projects we’ve been lucky to land recently, but even so, we had more visitors to this blog in the first three months of 2008 than we did the whole of last year (nearly 80,000 visitors).
For a small company like us, that’s a lot. Perhaps I should write less
As we had local SERPS that were second to none, too many leads and the phone ringing constantly, I used the Hobo blog to try and connect with the ‘neighbourhood‘ in my industry, experiment with site structure, attract some authority links from trusted relevant sites, improve the content on the site and showcase just a little of the ideas and passion we have at Hobo.
To be honest constant blogging jaded me a little. I might have a touch of the OCD so everyday life was becoming blogworthy and potential linkbait - it was starting to drive me a bit mad (again) - too many ideas cause actual work shutdown! Blogging is an addiction once you get started! It’s one I can do without. I am sitting here trying to write a post and ignore the 15 drafts I have, and I’m still getting ideas for other posts. It’s maddening, and lets not forget, I have parties to attend, music festivals to go to and a very active social life I want to keep feeding!
I say this keeping in mind a simple blog is the single most important tool you have in your marketing arsenal, if you’re willing to take the passion and integrity you have for your business and get it down in electronic form.
We’ve still not asked for work, or spent one penny in advertising, in our two years of trading - that’s largely down to the Hobo seo blog, and in the end, delivering on work promises.
Anyway I’m looking at the number of rss subscribers to this blog steadily march towards 4 figures, so I thought I’d act a bit more responsibly and do some posts on seo basics, seo strategy that can actually be deployed by readers as well as seo theory bunkum, which after all is where my heart lies - and I don’t think I’d receive any thanks for using the blog to target terms like seo company scotland any more
I can’t be bothered with controversy posts (or any kind of posts) just for the sake of daily blogging and whoring it for traffic or kudos. I certainly don’t want the blog to degenerate into a simple link fest, or “this guy said that - here’s my take”, although Tim Nash did say this on SEO in Nottinghamshire recently, and Rand Fishkin cooked up a great post on linkbuilding techniques LOL
So I hope you like the direction the blog takes in the next couple of weeks, I hope I can get back to writing a bit more coherently, and good luck in your own efforts ![]()
Thanks for visiting the Hobo Blog! Why not subscribe to our Feed for free internet marketing tips, we're publishing one tip a day in July! We really welcome any feedback on our articles, so don't be scared to leave a comment either!

I’m impressed - not spending one penny in advertising is some going. In my experience the vast majority of companies spend so much on advertising early on and it hardly ever works - it’s a major factor in why they go under.
I’m sincerely looking forward to the upcoming posts… when do they start?!
Kind regards,
Dan O’Neil
