Spam is a big problem for any site that allows UGC (user generated content).

Recently I highlighted an example where my fav music mag, the NME, had their forums/message boards possibly removed from Google because of it (or is it because of poor moderation?)

What about my favourite social media news site?

We've recently updated our comments policy and increased the number of comments a visitor has to make to get seo friendly links in comment signatures to reward long term readers and make it a bit harder for dofollow spammers ;) - I told you dofollow spamming wasn't a long term strategy....

Do I even need to add anything? A fast host could be argued to be a prerequisite in 2010, and a fast site too, if your web designer has any clue. (more…)

I don’t normally do posts actually promoting anybody, but I thought the service we’re getting from our host UKFast.co.uk deserved a quick note.

UKFast have really helped us the last few weeks/month with our dedicated hosting and moving the site too, and the uk based server we’re on is FAST to say the least (which is cool because actual page load speed is rummoured to being playing more of a role in rankings in Google in 2010). (more…)

Comment spamming advice just posted from Google:

At best, a link spammer might spend hours doing spammy linkdrops which would count for little or nothing because Google is pretty good at devaluing these types of links

One of the reasons I moderate all comments, and use a custom wordpress comments plugin so only returning visitors get a search engine friendly link. (more…)

I’ve seen a few people mention this kind of link building tactic in the past but i thought seeing as Google itself does it for others, it’s an example worth highlighting, and perhaps copying.

This looks like a decent link for those linked at Google Press Center….. a single outbound contextual link on a cached PR7 page on a very trusted domain. (more…)
