Google Page Rank - PR Update - Tue 29 April 2008
Blurb by ShaunGoogle Page Rank Update - Tue 29 April 2008
We’re getting reports of a Google Page Rank update today, Tue 29 April 2008, happening across certain data centers.
It’s clear it’s not complete, and it’s worth pointing out Google Toolbar PR Green you see in the update is out of date and not an accurate measurement of the strength of a page, it’s more ‘an indication’ of the quality of a page some time ago.
A Google Toolbar PR Update is usually not much more than a bit of free advertising for Google. A high PR does not necessarily mean a lot of traffic, although it does usually cause quite a stir in the webmaster community.

I always find this a bit odd - I’ve suddenly gained my largest page rank (4) on a page that has only 2 external links to it. I know it creates a stir in the SEO world, but it’s all really rather a mystery! Maybe google do it to keep us all interested and create discussion and musings on it - hence your comment about it being good advertising for google - maybe it’s the other kind of PR really!

Toolbar Page Rank is calculated by the number of websites (that pass pagerank) that link to you. A PR 6 page can link to you making your site a PR 4 site.
Anyway Google PR is vanity - rankings and traffic = sanity.
To be fair this has been the most muted PR update I have ever witnessed.
Thanks for the comment

“Anyway Google PR is vanity - rankings and traffic = sanity.”
that is truly correct, PR is not really helpful in rankings but it gives impressions on other webmasters that your site is really good.

More and more (non technical) marketing folk are becoming aware of pagerank and are using it to gauge a site’s ‘worth’. So from a reputation perspective, being concerned with pagerank makes good business sense - if your potential clients are marketing folk
